Feline Sleuths

Updated on August 4, 2013

Cat Cozies For the Mystery Lover

I love reading mystery books and I love animals so a cozy mystery that involves animals is a real plus for me! I must confess that dogs are my first love and I have read a lot of dog mysteries but as I was running out of dog mysteries to read I have recently discovered that I also enjoy reading "cat cozies."

These are book series in which cats in some way get involved with or help to solve a mystery and I wanted to share the series I have found with other cat cozy lovers...and introduce them to total newbies.

If you think you would rather read dog mysteries then check out my lens Dog Detectives.

"I have studied many philosophers and many cats. The wisdom of cats is infinitely superior."

- Hippolyte Taine

A Magical Cats Mystery - By Sofie Kelly

This is a really enjoyable and "cat-ivating" new series! I like all 3 of the main characters, Kathleen the human, and Owen and Hercules the cats. The interesting twist here is that the cats play a major part in the mystery by getting their human involved in the mystery and then using their "magical powers" to help her find the clues to solving it. I won't spoil the fun by cluing you in on just what kind of magical powers the cats have, you will have to find that out for your self!

"Thousands of years ago, cats were worshipped as gods. Cats have never forgotten this."

Cat in the Stacks Mysteries - By Miranda James

This is a new series with interesting characters and a charming setting in small town Mississippi. The series features Diesel, a Maine coon cat who loves attention, walks on a leash, and chirps and warbles rather than meowing. Diesel was rescued by Charlie Harris, a good natured librarian, who takes Diesel almost everywhere he goes in a halter with a leash. Diesel does not take an active part in the crime solving but he does accompany Charlie as he paws through all the information to solve the "purr-plexing" mysteries.

To err is human, to purr is feline.

~Robert Byrne

The Midnight Louie Series - By Carole Nelson Douglas

Midnight Louie is a tough-talking, crime solving tom cat who is like a feline Sam Spade and the 'doll' who helps him, Temple Barr is a shoe obsessed public relations free lancer. Together the pair prowl the mean streets of Las Vegas as they puzzle out answers to crimes that stump the local police. This is a light cozy series in which you get clues and a "cat's eye" view of the "purr-dicament that gives you the chance to figure out the mystery.

I wish I could write as mysterious

as a cat.

- Edgar Allan Poe

A Cats in Trouble Mystery - By Leann Sweeney

Jillian Hart is a recent widow in a small gossipy South Carolina town. Her world centers around her three rescue cats and her business making cat quilts. Cats are center stage every step of the way in this series as the pages are filled with fascinating cat lore, humor and knowledge. If a cat is in trouble, Jillian Hart will use her vast knowledge of cat lore, her intellectual acumen, her instincts and her heart to solve the case. Cat lover's should find this series to be purr-fectly delightful!

What greater gift than the

love of a cat?

- Charles Dickens

Mrs. Murphy Mysteries - By Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown (cat)

The thoroughly likable herione in this series is Harry the postmistress of a small Virginia town, who is followed everywhere by her four-footed amateur detectives and constant companions, Mrs. Murphy, a gray tiger cat, and Tucker her Welsh corgi. This series is a delightful light read containing animals that talk to one another, and feel that they are superior to humans that do not speak "cat" or "dog". There is a wonderful interaction between Harry, her pets, and the residents of the town and it is fun to see how the animal sleuths help in solving the cases!

Since each of us is blessed with only one life, why not live it with a cat?

- Robert Stearns

Joe Grey Mysteries - By Shirley Rousseau Murphy

Imagine being a cat who has suddenly and inexplicably learned to read, speak, and understand English and then meets another cat who has undergone the same transformation! As fantastical as this may seem the books are so well written and the characters so well-delineated that the stories flow seamlessly, and apart from their fantastic abilities, the cats are recognizably felines who behave just as any house cat might. If you are a lover of cats, mystery, and fantasy then you can't afford to miss this thoroughly delightful series!

Everything I know I learned from my cat: When you're hungry, eat. When you're tired, nap in a sunbeam.

When you go to the vet's,

pee on your owner.

- Gary Smith

The Cat Who Mysteries - By Lillian Jackson Braun

The Cat Who is a series that has spanned over 30 years and features many charming, irascible characters and picturesque "tails." The books feature a reporter named James Qwilleran and his Siamese cats Koko and Yum-Yum. Qwillern has a strong bond with his cats and often risks his own life to save them. Koko is a brilliant Siamese with a sixth sense that has him digging up evidence and using body language including a "death howl" to impart clues. There is a reason that this series has been around so long as cat lovers will find these books entertaining and addicting!

Cats never strike a pose that isn't photogenic.
